The Sony GV-D1000 video walkman does it all, recording as a digital VCR using the MiniDV format, while also playing back people's favorite clips on the included 4-inch LCD screen. The MiniDV format is a favorite among digital videographers, as it offers three times the color bandwidth of traditional VHS video, giving it enhanced clarity and realism. The device also includes a memory stick media terminal, to which a user can record digital still images in 640 x 480 resolution from videotapes, through the analog input, and from digital video. The memory stick makes it easy to transfer images to personal computers for e-mailing, printing, or sharing with other digital devices. The recorder also includes an iLink output for direct transfer between two devices equipped with an IEEE 1394 interface, such as computers, camcorders, or digital VCRs.

Other features include an MPEG movie memory mode--which captures compressed MPEG1 video with audio onto a memory stick--a USB port that delivers streaming video over the Internet, and an editing mode for manipulating up to 20 scenes. Users can convert analog NTSC video to digital format through the analog inputs, or directly to a PC using the iLink interface. The GV-D1000 doesn't skimp on audio, either, offering 12-bit/16-bit recording that sounds as clear as a compact disc.

Users will also appreciate the crystal-clear pause mode and slow motion playback, along with the playback zoom that allows editors to enlarge, crop, and resize images. The unit also includes an index titler for creating movie titles and a built-in 4k integrated circuit memory chip.

With MiniDV and S-VHS recorders integrated in a single unit, the JVC SRVS30U provides a complete high-performance solution for editing MiniDV projects from your video camcorder, finishing to S-VHS, or dubbing to or from either format. In addition to DV format compatibility, the SRVS30U simplifies the editing process by enabling you to download video directly from your camcorder via a direct Firewire (i.Link) connection.

The Mini-DV side of the dual-deck allows direct playback of video which you have recorded on a MiniDV tape. It also allows playback of recordings of DVCAM mini tapes, too. You can connect the deck to a Mini DV camcorder to edit footage. The SRVS30U will read SMPTE timecode on pre-recorded tapes, displaying it (down to seconds) on the viewing monitor. This feature lets you use the machine for pre-edit logging.

The SRVS30U's Easy Edit feature lets you choose up to 8 segments at a time on a MiniDV cassette and automatically copy over to SVHS. And since 8 pre-set programs can be stored in its memory, the deck lets you store 64 segments in total. You may make specific dubs of memorized segments simply by recalling the program number.

The Super VHS side offers Expansion Technology, which allows the broader bandwidth SVHS signal be recorded on standard VHS cassettes. Expansion Technology gives visibly higher quality on less expensive, easier to find VHS tape. It offers the following connection options:

Each deck features 4-head recording to ensure superior picture and sound.

With two decks in one unit, you can now record up to 12 hours of programs at a time. You can schedule up to 16 shows in advance with the recording timer. You'll never be left hanging by a recording that cuts off too early--the DDV3110 offers a feature that automatically adjusts the tape speed while recording in timer mode, fitting the entire program onto the tape.

Skipping unwanted material is easier than ever with the DDV3110. The Commercial Advance feature automatically marks commercials while recording. When you play back the tape, the VCR will fast forward past the commercials. You can even opt to have a blue screen appear during the commercial skip, so you never have to see another ad. Although the DDV3110 can handle the process automatically, you retain the option to control the recording and playback yourself.

When dubbing tapes recorded with the Commercial Advance feature, the commercials will not be copied onto your edited tape. When using the commercial-free copy mode, you can record a show in deck one, and have the DDV3110 automatically create a cleaned-up dub copy in deck two.

When you are watching a prerecorded videocassette, you can jump straight to the movie with GoVideo's Movie Advance feature. The DDV3110 will prompt you to skip each or every preview at the beginning of the tape. The remote features a jog/shuttle dial that gives you even greater control over what you watch. Along with the automatic skip features, you can fast-forward and reverse with great precision at high speed or even frame by frame.

Home-movie makers will find a number of features on the DDV3110 that are perfect for creating an impressive final cut. The VCR allows you to create onscreen titles for your movies that can vary in length and onscreen time. With the automatic editing function, you can flag up to eight scenes that you want to use on your final copy. The DDV3110 will do all the work for you in the dubbing process. You can add new music or narration to your movie as well. Simply connect your audio source to the front or back audio/video inputs.

Setup is simple. Your available channels will automatically be set as soon as you turn on the DDV3110 for the first time. Composite-video outputs provide a quick connection from VCR to TV or to your home theater receiver. Front inputs allow for easy connections of camcorders and audio sources when you are editing tapes. An easy-to-use, onscreen menu lets you customize your setup by identifying the components plugged into the DDV3110.

You can find digital camcorders for slightly less than the Sony DCR-TRV140, but you won't get Sony's quality and extensive feature list. Captured video proved to be of high quality, whether we viewed it on our TV or transferred it to our PC via the speedy FireWire connection or USB.

The USB connection can also be used for setting up the TRV140 as a Webcam via their USB streaming technology. It took some playing around with the Pixela Image Mixer software before we could get the device working properly. In general, a dedicated Webcam would be a better device for this purpose.

But as a digital camcorder, we were quite pleased with the TRV140. Its 20x optical zoom (and 560x digital zoom) allowed for extreme close-ups, while the Super NightShot infrared mode allowed us to record in complete darkness. The mode automatically adjusted the shutter speed during night recording, resulting in a brighter, sharper image than Sony's normal NightShot mode.

The TRV140 isn't without faults. It won't accept inputted video or play back old Hi-8 or 8mm tapes recorded in analog mode, and the battery lasted only about an hour during our tests. But you can purchase Sony's optional NP-FM91 battery pack, which extends battery life to over 10 hours.

The TRV140 has the typical boxiness of the Handycam, but it weighs only a little more than two pounds, with battery. It's comfortable to hold, and its button layout will prove quite familiar to previous Handycam users. It also comes with a remote control for handling the camera's functions from a distance.
